FAMILIARS
There are three races of familiars: Pixies, Elfin and Sprites. They have magical abilities but are generally much weaker than other races. Familiars are naturally found living in a singular community, protected by their combined magic.
They bond to individuals of magical and non-magical beings. Familiars usually bond to individuals with complimentary powers but opposite personalities. Once bonded, they can lend their strength to their bonded partner and their own magical abilities are increased.
Pixies are small, winged creatures that can bond to fairies and wizards. Like both of the races, their powers are usually associated with positive emotion. Pixies have much more specific powers than the other races.
Lifespan: 100 - 120 years
Appearance: Around 10 - 15cm tall. They have many features in common with humans though appear much more delicate (though looks can be deceiving).
Creation: Pixies are born within the tree of life. The tree gifts young pixies with powers and when they are strong enough, they leave the tree to join the rest of their kind.
Bonding: When a pixie bonds, they increase both their strength and the strength of their bonded partner. Pixies help fairies to develop their magic and their character. However, sometimes if an individual undergoes severe changes, they may not be right for their partner anymore and they can change.
Location: They are found in the Pixie Village, built around the tree of life.
Elfin are similar to pixies in appearance though there seems to be a much wider diversity among body shapes and colours among the elfin. As they bond to witches, their powers often have a darker touch to them. Elfin are more bold by nature than pixies or sprites and can be very mischievous when left to their own devices.
Lifespan: 100 - 120 years
Appearance: Around 15 - 20cm tall. Their bodies are more variable in size than the pixies are and often have more of a range of skin and hair colours.
Creation: Elfin are born in Lake Roccaluce. They are born from the pods of Silver Lilies and which bloom when the Elfin are ready to venture out into the world.
Bonding: When elfin bond, they increase both their strength and the strength of their bonded partner. Elfin help witches and sorcerers to develop as magic users and characters. However, sometimes if an individual undergoes severe changes, they may not be right for their partner anymore and they can change.
Location: They are found in and around Lake Roccaluce in Magix.
Sprites can bond to fae, humans or dwarves. Unbonded, they do not have a defined form and appear as glowing wisps of smoke (granting them the name of 'Will-O'-the-Wisp' on Earth). Once they bond, they take on the form of a small animal to match their partner.
Lifespan: 150 - 180 years
Appearance: Unlike the pixies and elfin, sprites are spiritual creatures and so have no defined form. They will take the appearance of a small animal once they bond (cat, fox, rabbit, songbird, etc.).
Creation: Sprites are formed within the glowing crystal caves on Earth and live there until they find a bonded partner. Until then, they will usually only leave their cave at night and wander along paths in forests or around swamps.
Bonding: When sprites bond, they increase both their strength and the strength of their bonded partner as well as sprites taking their permanent form. A sprite cannot leave its partner but can slowly "fade" if they are mistreated by their partner.
Location: They are found in several old caves on Earth.
