Learned Magic
Although Humans and Dwarves do not have innate magic, there are three forms of magic that they can learn and practise: Rune Magic, Potionology and Divine Magic (used by paladins).
RUNE MAGIC
The Art of the Dwarves
Rune magic (also known as magical smithing) is the blending of smithing and the rune-carving to give an object enhancements or magical properties. It is most commonly used for weapons, armour and jewellery. Whilst rune magic is famously best perfected by the Dwarves, some humans have also learnt this skill. Rune magic requires the use of magic metals as well as a deep understanding of runes and how runes function. An inexperienced smith could create armour or a weapon that can backfire on its user.
The most common runic enhancements are:
- Apply extra damage to a weapon (frost damage, burn damage, poison damage, etc.)
- Grant (partial) resistance to a certain element or spell type (fireproof, waterproof, etc.)
- Exaggerate or suppress traits of the user (boost courage, become beserk temporarily, etc.)
[*] Most rune magic is used to give beneficial properties and abilities to an object, however in the past wicked druids were known to 'curse' objects using evil runes to bring down kingdoms by causing the user to become greedy, paranoid, etc.
POTIONOLOGY
The Art of the Druids
Potionology was first developed and used by the druids of Earth and is the use and blending of magical ingredients in order to acquire a substance with magical effects. Whilst the eldar can use magic to help stabilise their potions, a non-magic user requires the utmost precision and accuracy when making potions. Though magic is not required for potionology, magical ingredients are required.
The most common effects a potion can have are:
- Change the appearance of the subject (potions of morphosis)
- Cause damage to the subject (poisonous potions)
- Restoration of health or stamina to the subject (healing potions)
- Grant temporary resistance to certain attacks (defense potions)
[*] most potions are made in liquid or solid form, however high-ranked druids have been known to create potions in mist and gaseous forms that can cause damage, hallucinations, etc.
DIVINE MAGIC
The Art of the Paladins
Divine magic (also known as 'borrowed magic') is magic granted to a Human or Dwarf by a deity in exchange for their services. This class are known as paladins and they must work to uphold their deity's teachings and values as well as carry out various tasks to prove their loyalty. Paladins do not have magic as strong as the eldar or the fae but they can call upon the favour of their deity for fortune in their tasks. If a paladin betrays the deity they pledged themselves to, their powers can be stripped in an instant.
The six temples that a Paladin can pledge himself to are:
- The temple of Mercury (Zenith): Mercury grants his paladins powers of sound or music. He values eloquence and is a champion for those who go unheard. Unlike the other gods, he doesn't have a strict moral code and his paladins are infamously known as silver-tongued tricksters. Paladins of Mercury are often tasked with helping grant secret wishes made to the deity.
- The temple of Venus (Linphea): Venus grants her paladins powers of love or nature. She values peace and is a protector of love in all its forms. Paladins of Linphea are often tasked with resolving conflict or protecting those who act in the name of love and call Venus as their guardian.
- The temple of Mars (Solaria): Mars grants his paladins powers of fire or war. He values courage and leadership that are worthy of his destructive powers. Paladins of Mars are often tasked with protecting the innocent or those without means as well as asking his paladins to lead in battles.
- The temple of Jupiter (Magix): Jupiter grants his paladins powers of air or light. He values power and loyalty above all else and often asks the great sacrifices of his paladins. Paladins of Jupiter are often tasked with perilous tasks for the good of all the deities.
- The temple of Saturn (Eraklyon): Saturn grants his paladins powers of crystals or gems. He values justice and generosity and grants his rich powers to those who use it wisely. Paladins of Saturn are often tasked with resolving injustice in the world.
- The temple of Neptune (Andros): Neptune grants his paladins powers of water. He values freedom and forgiveness and promises to wash away sins of past to those who seek mercy from him. Paladins of Neptune are often tasked with liberating those who are trapped.
- The temple of Pluto (Magix): Pluto grants his paladins spiritual gifts. This allows them to see and communicate to spirits as well as use ghost-type magic. Paladins of Pluto are often tasked to calm, capture or defeat spirits that interfere or haunt the living.
[*] A paladin can be granted a divine task at any time (usually in the form of a dream).
